09.30.00 - The CueCat Battle

If you're looking for some information about the CueCat hardware, you can pick some up on my mirror: CueCat Hardware specs.. Stay tuned, I have a nifty little VB proggy that decodes the output and looks up the UPC on DC's servers.
So why even care about this free barcode scanner? Here are some quotes from Doug Davis, Digital Convergence's CTO:
"Just because I give you the Cat scanner, it does not immediately give you the right to go into business against me with my own technology. We have an intended use for it."
"People can't expect to take one of our devices and run it through their own engine," he said. "There are boundaries.... It must still do what it was built for, but they can extend its functionality."
*sigh* And now they are trying to sell licenses for $20USD a pop to "would-be" hackers. In case you don't already know: there is no license that comes with the CueCat scanner. Nothing in the packaging says that you can't take the scanner and use it as a flashlight or dog toy or even a nightlite. The license is on the software...not the hardware. Just my $.02
